Soldiers among seven arrested in Manus for drinking in public

MANUS police have arrested seven men for allegedly drinking and causing nuisance in public and drink driving.
The arrests were made on Saturday in Lorengau town.
Of the seven, two were soldiers from the Papua New Guinea Defence Force at the Lombrum Naval Base, and two officers from the Papua New Guinea Immigration Office in Lorengau.
According to Manus police commander Chief Inspector David Yapu, the two immigrations officer, two soldiers and three civilians were allegedly seen by police drinking alcohol and driving around Lorengau town in a hired vehicle intended for the use of refugee operations.
Yapu claimed the seven allegedly assaulted a government officer and damaged his properties.
He described their behaviour as “disgraceful”.
Yapu said the seven men would appear before the Lorengau District Court tomorrow facing various charges.
