Members of the PNG Defence Force Engineering Battalion joined forces with Mt Hagen urban local level government yesterday to clear rubbish from around the main market.
Members of the Mt Hagen City Youth Association also helped the soldiers remove rubbish that had piled up and strated to smell.
Acting city manager Peter Noki said his office had asked the soldiers for help.
He said it was the responsibility of the market management to take away the rubbish but it did not do that. It took the whole day to clean the market.
“The market management thinks that it is my responsibility to clean it, but when you look at it is within the market boundary,” Noki said.
“This rubbish is just in front of the market car park and they should take it on as their responsibility.
“We all need team work because Hagen is just a small place.”
