Teaching Service Commission (TSC) chairman Baran Sori, pictured, is urging teachers to remain teaching at their respective schools until the academic year ends.
He said this in light of an increasing number of teachers gathering outside National Department of Education headquarters at Fincorp Haus in Port Moresby.
Sori said teachers were paid until the end of the academic year, Dec 7, and should not be leaving schools early.
“At this time of the year when grades 8, 10 and 12 examinations are over, the commission is also experiencing increase in the number of teachers turning up,” he said.
“Meanwhile, internal assessments for the remaining students continue.
“Teachers are expected to stay at the respective schools they are currently teaching at, to complete them.
“Teachers are urged to remain at their schools and compile test results and write reports for students.”
Sori called on school inspectors to do head counts of teachers for schools in their respective inspectorates.
“Report to the provincial education divisions, teachers who have left schools,” he said.
“Likewise, boards of managements for elementary and primary schools and the boards of governing councils for secondary and high schools must ensure all teachers teaching at their respective schools are present until Dec 7.”
Sori also called on district education managers, provincial and district administrators and their deputies for social services to ensure school inspectors provided reports of teachers.
“Head teachers can also report teachers who are on pay but have left schools, direct to Teaching Service Commission,” he added.
