South Fly locals still struggling despite rain

PEOPLE in the South Fly district of Western are facing the effect of the continuous dry weather which last weekend’s rain had minimal effect on.
Waetang Kago, the head teacher of Taeme Primary School in the district, said food gardens had been badly affected.
“Yams have dried out, coconuts have produced little juice, and sago has turned yellow and having dehydrated juice,” Kago told The National.
The communities in the East Trans Fly of South Fly district are praying for rain.
“Our gardens are drying out. The two days of showers over the weekend had no effect at all. The dry weather continues,” Kago said.
He said the dry season had started in August.
The water was “turning milky”.
“That is not good for washing and drinking,” he said.
“Many streams, creeks, and swamps have dried up. The level of water at Fly River has dropped dramatically. We are not walking to Daru from the South Fly through the East Trans Fly road because of the hot sun and the high temperature,” he said.
He said the people were praying for rain.
