Spartans claim UPNG rugby league minor premiership

SCHOOL of Natural and Physical Science rugby league club Spartans are the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) Rugby Football League minor premiers.
Spartans were the underdogs coming into the competition, however, they surprised the rest of the clubs by topping the ladder at the end of the regular season.
Captain and final-year student Gore Delume said the club did not expect to make the finals, let alone win the minor premier.
But it was through hard work, discipline and humility that they had made it to the top of the table.
“I’d say most of the things we did in the club was based on discipline and trust,” he said. “Most of the players in the club are freshmen and we were just trying to help them get a taste of UPNG rugby league.
“But somehow, we made it this far.
“Having said that, the fight is not over, it is the beginning so we have to continue competing until the end.”
The competition is heading into its finals with six teams to battle for the student representative council trophy.
The six teams are Spartans, Arts Pelicans, UPNG Medics, UPNG Dragons, OC United and SBPP West Eagles.
