SPEAKER Job Pomat will sign the gazettal notice to be distributed to MPs advising them of the next sitting date on Monday Dec 14, says Clerk to Parliament Kala Aufa.
Aufa told The National that Pomat, who was away in Manus when the Supreme Court handed down the decision to recall parliament, had arrived yesterday and held a meeting with the Parliament management team.
Aufa said because the Supreme Court had ordered Parliament to sit, a gazettal notice must be signed by Pomat.
“He arrived today (yesterday) and was under a lot of stress from the events of the last three weeks. So he will sign the gazettal notice (today),” he said.
Aufa explained that it is required by law that instruments must be signed by the Speaker especially if there was a court order.
Five judges of the Supreme Court had ordered that Parliament resume its sitting on Monday, Dec 14.
On the order of business for Monday, Aufa said the Leader of Government Business Rainbo Paita would reveal that based on the government caucus meeting.
He said the Parliament senior management team had briefed Pomat on the decisions of the Supreme Court.
“We met and discussed the court order, a copy of which we have received and will follow,” Aufa said.
“Once Pomat signs the gazettal notice the letter will be distributed to all MPs and relevant parties on the resumption of Parliament.”

  • I wonder how it feels to be the head of the Parliament and proclaim to nation that the Deputy and the Clerks erred only to be revealed by the Highest Court the Speaker’s ruling is unconstitutional.

  • One of the worst Speaker in our country’s history. He seem to think and talk as if he knows more and owns the parliament like his haus kakaruk. Empty drums make a lot of noise. He is a VILLAIN TO PNG PARLIAMENTARY DEMOCRACY AND CONSTITUTION. He should apologise to the nation for causing as almost constitution crisis and inciting confusion and mayhem not only to both opposition and government but the whole country. Kain ol empty garamut ya ino nap apologise tu ya…

  • Speaker broke the constitution to save our country from corrupt leaders like PO, BN and PP and the cohorts of previous PMs. PO and BN are very cunning, desperate men, they pretending to be good, don’t ever forget the forceful removal of legitimate government, illegally declaring vacancy in the office of PM, PO became the first person in the country to illegally occupy PMs office in 2011. Court declared later that the occupation of PM office was unconstitutional. We haven’t forgotten what happened? My personal view is that the speakers action is justified at the back of historical significance changes on our resource sector equity sharing, ICAC passing and major planned construction of roads and bridges that will boost the country’s economic growth. Don’t blindly support day light corruption, stealing, inflated contracts and manipulation of laws to stay in power to legitimate corruption and stealing that happened under POs leadership. Its time now to Force your MPs in the opposition to use their heads, rather than making shallow decisions between their legs.

  • Speaker acted on his powers to correct the unconstitutional move made by BN on Dec 13 when BN (even though not a minister) moved a motion to adjourned the parliament sitting to Dec 1. Unfortunately, speaker recall the parliament to sit on a date and time without due consideration to democratic principals (i.e., not giving ample time to opposition to attend the parliament sitting for debating). PO and his master mind lawyers used this loopholes (the democratic principals not observed by speaker) to win the court case. This is what PO’s lawyers are very good at (using legal techniques to make wrong becomes right). The situation that triggers this political tug-of-war is the unconstitutional moves of BN. Unfortunately, this is still before the courts (Leader of Government Business RP as the complainant in this court case) (I stand to be corrected).

The game of political tug-of-war is not over yet. The grand final is likely to be played on Monday the 14th Dec.

  • Daniel,
How can the Speaker act on his powers to correct what is unconstitutional when the 5 Bench Supreme Court Judges who through their lifetime are the interpreters and champions of law find his interpretation and ruling of Parliamentary Standing Orders unconstitutional?
Are you saying the judges ruling is wrong?
The underlying fact is that the Deputy Speaker and the Clerks of Parliament never erred in their initial handling of what transpired on the floor of Parliament. It is the Speaker who erred and almost brought the nation into a political chaos.

    • Hi my friend Laban, I’ve travel in time to come back to you on your question (1stly, welcome to time travel if you’re still in the stone ages). Go read my comments on Dec 14, 2020 news, a news two days from now and you will find answers to your questions. I will not spoon feed you here. Make some attempt to travel into the future to find your own answers.

  • Erupe,
To be the Speaker, that is the most neutral Seat of the highest order of the Parliament House. If you break the rules of that Seat to support one side of the house then you shouldn’t be sitting in that seat.
The position of the Speaker is to maintain respect, integrity, fairness and stability of the house and never to take sides.

  • Daniel,
You have my support, the speaker is right in calling parliament but had not given enough time to all MPs.
I believe there will be a submission for a slip-rule.
    Just an opinion.

  • Guys, your opinion regarding the judgement is now irrelevant.
Supreme court declared publicly the speaker was wrong.
We can carry on with our weightless argument.

  • Thank goodness we have the Clerk of Parliament (Kala Aufa) whom the Speaker should consult for advise.

  • Small or Big, a sin is a sin. The same applies, a wrong is a wrong committed and cannot be justify with good reason to make oneself look better or validate a poiont.

Current PM always calls God’s nating nating and blind people who fail to critically analysis events and fairly give reasonable views on the government or opposition. What about the K10.2m paid to Nuigini Biomed? Process where not followed, Speaker unconstitutional calling of Parliament to sit on 17/11/2020, is that God’s will?

All our leaders are not righteous and will never be cause money is the root of all evil.
Let the government talk less and do more if this current government want to be still in power. Apart from passed bill (Acts), tangible developments must be implemented as well so ol man merry blo country bai lookim lo physical eye kiau blo ol na bai tok gavman makim work. Inap lo ol gudpla toktok na action sampla somting pastaim.
May the best political team win.

  • Good afternoon everyone, am coming again reminding everyone of my visions. In my third vision I saw BN was trying to put neck tie around his neck but neck tie became too short and I informed everyone that BN will not take PM seat.
Now looks like this vision comes to end as the opposition members have already appointed PP as alternate PM.
In my other vision I saw PMJM was walking with one sided leg and he kept on walking.Believe that there will be something happening after this.Part of this vision was completed because he has already made some decisions without opposition. This may also mean he will continue run this country with half of the members and complete the term if the numbers of both sides are equal/balanced.Things are happening slowly and expecting my visions to come through. In my third vision I saw an old put neck around PO. After all these gone, PO will come back to power.I know most people will disagree with me when I say PO will come back to power but remember, In Hebrew 13:8 it says God is same yesterday, today and forever and so he knows the past, present and future. Whether it will be a evil or good person will rule, Gods knows everything and let us know in advance. Thank you and God bless PNG.
