A THREE-day conference of PNG’s heads of missions overseas last week was one of the very few such occasions since independence, Governor-General Sir Michael Ogio says.

He said this at the New Year Diplomatic Reception he hosted at Government House.

Most PNG senior representatives overseas now return home to exchange ideas with colleagues, officials from government organisations and the private sector, Sir Michael said.

“They will review and draw on their experience and discuss possible strategies that will support

efforts to promote sustainable developments for our people,” he said.

The theme of the conference was “Connect with Purpose” and Sir Michael said it was intended to emphasise and expand the country’s development aspirations.

The reception provided an opportunity for the diplomats to interact and link with foreign counterparts and organisations accredited to PNG.

He said this was important as these foreign missions made valuable contributions to the country by strengthening relations with their government and promoting trade and investment.

Sir Michael said PNG’s consular posts had the challenge and the opportunity to take diverse potential of PNG to partners overseas.

“Their efforts bear a significant contribution towards progress and development,” he said.
