THE St John Ambulance service is concerned about the expected fourth Coronavirus (Covid-19) surge which the National Control Centre warned could take place next month, chief executive officer Matt Cannon says.
“Looking to Australia, with limited measures and the presence of Omicron variant, we are greatly concerned of the significant and widespread transmission of the Omicron variant in Papua New Guinea,” he said.
Cannon said over the last seven days, St John Ambulance had responded to more than 400 emergency incidents across Papua New Guinea.
He said while none had been confirmed, the Covid-19 respiratory cases accounted for 71 of these incidents.
“Respiratory cases could include shortness of breath, coughing, pneumonia, exacerbation of tuberculosis or other such matters that involves breathing problems,” he said.
Port Moresby General Hospital director for medical service Dr Kone Sobi told The National yesterday that the rate had been steady since Dec 1.
