A MAN was left for dead by pirates after he was stabbed several times in Madang on Saturday.
Madang police commander acting Supt Mazuc Rubiang said Martin Jack was saved after a family found him unconscious and bleeding profusely in his boat.
“They sent him to the Modilon Hospital where he is recuperating,” he said.
Jack’s ordeal began when he borrowed a boat from Leo Bakarum in the afternoon to go to Karanget Island to buy ice.
On his way from Pik Island, Jack was confronted by the pirates who tried to kill and bury him.
He bled profusely and fell unconscious, and the pirates thought he had died and tried to hide his body and boat in a swamp.
Acting Supt Rubiang said Bakarum then sent his wife to ask Jack’s family on his whereabouts, but they told her that they had waited till 6am, but he did not return home.
Bakarum then received information that Jack was in the hospital and the boat was found abandoned in Erima swamp.
“The family then went to the hospital and then reported the matter to the police,” acting Supt Rubiang said.
“Investigations revealed that the pirates thought Jack had died and brought him towards Erima coast in Raicoasts Astrolobe bay local level government and tried to hide him in the swamp.” He said when Jack found that he was alone, he fled to a house and was helped by a family. Acting Supt Rubiang praised and thanked the family who rescued Jack.
