Standing orders review suggested

MARKHAM MP Koni Iguan has called on the Speaker and the Leader of Government Business to make changes to the standing orders.
Iguan said every new parliament should make changes in the standing orders to improve the process.
“I suggest that the Speaker should have a list of MPs who have questions to ask so he will follow that list during questions time to avoid everyone rushing and raising their hands,” he said.
“And MPs should have their questions prepared well in advance so they do not waste time.”
He said the time for questions without notice should be increased from 45 minutes to an hour.
He also called on the Department of Works to introduce user-pay fees or toll gates for vehicles using the Highlands Highway.
He said a lot of vehicles using the highway were not using the weighing stations, especially trucks carrying huge loads.
“This highway is used by heavy trucks that carry a lot of load which is a contributing factor to the deteriorating status,” Iguan said.
“None of these trucks are using the weighing station.
“If the weighing station is used, we will have fewer problems with the highway because the big trucks will know the right amount of load to carry.
“I call on the Works Minister and his department to consider toll gates because fees collected from motorists would be used to maintain the highways.”
