Step up preparation

Letters

IF the United States of America with all its medical resources and facilities is struggling to fight the onslaught of Covid-19 pandemic, no developing country such as PNG will stand a chance at all should there be an outbreak.
New York is now the epicentre in the US.
PNG needs to step up on its ‘prevention is better than cure’ modus of operandi.
There should be no complacency by the Government to allow gaps for Covid-19 to be imported onto the shores.
It is necessary for a bipartisan support to extend the state of emergency (SOE) to monitor the borders per the outcome of the parliament.
Concurrently the Government should allow domestic businesses, production and trade to occur without allowing mass movement of people till the country is cleared internally of Covid-19.
Those who rely on the informal economy will suffer the most.
The Government should look at short-term measures such as providing food rations.
