STOP blaming the previous government for the current economic woes of the country, East Sepik Governor Allan Bird says.
“Take ownership of and start addressing the problems,” he added.
Speaking in Parliament on Friday, Bird said: “All the time we are making assumptions and throwing mud at each other (in Parliament), the underlying problem remains.
“I personally do not want to continue to blame the former PNC (Peoples National Congress)-led government.
“I think that is an old story and we should act with remedial measures for the economy.”
Bird urged the Government to look into ways to work together with business partners and its agencies to address the issues to benefit all rather than a few people.
He noted that every year more than 70,000 young people completed formal education system but the Government had not created jobs accordingly.
“There are not many jobs in the country and thousands of jobs are declining from the report in the previous and this Government,” Bird said.
“The Government had all the programmes in the districts and provincial levels but there were no reports to show how unemployment is being dealt with.”
Bird said only K900 million of the K24 billion Budget this year had been allocated for the economy while other sectors received more with people having to endure rising inflation.
“The Government should focus locally by increasing local production and taking remedial measures to counter the effects of the global economy,” he said.
