Stop harassing street vendors

Letters

LAW enforcers continue to use violence and extort money from street vendors who typically sell betel nut and cigarettes.
We have witnessed cases of street vendors losing lives, one such case of a mother who was hit by a moving vehicle when the police chased the vendors at Hohola market.
If and where street vending should be legal has been a topic of considerable public debate for the last three to four years.
While the National Capital District Commission has the right to regulate street vending, people violating city ordinances should be treated in accordance with the law.
They should not be subject to cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment, arbitrary detention, and other human rights violation.
As it is obvious, laws restricting street vending disproportionately affects women and girls, who already face discrimination in other areas of employment.
God has created all equal, have some sense of respect for human lives.

  • Street should be regarded as path ways & drive ways, not market ways, all who want to do selling/buying should be at the right designated place called Market, we are encouraging people to do the wrong thing to achieve wrong results……
