MADANG police commander Supt Mazuc Rubiang says PMV operators in the province are flouting traffic rules by continuing to overload their vehicles.
“Many accidents have occurred due to overloading passengers, but they are still ignoring our warnings,” he said.
“Many had been arrested and charged, but they continue to ignore the rules.
“Overloading is a serious traffic offence but I have seen PMV trucks, buses and even private vehicles overloading passengers moving around in town and along the highways.
“PMV drivers and their crew must adhere to the passenger limits because there must be space inside the vehicles.
“The Covid-19 pandemic public health protocols are still in force.
“We will discuss with traffic officers on conducting mass arrests since they have ignored our warnings and advice.”
Supt Rubiang said the roads in town were littered with potholes and passengers sitting on the side of the vehicle.
“Some are seen hanging on the side and can fall and suffer serious injuries,” he said.
“It is important that we think of our safety first.
“The drivers must follow the traffic rules or face prosecution.”
