Stopping abuses needs firm political will: G-G

GOVERNOR-GENERAL Sir Bob Dadae says reducing alcohol and drug abuses-related harm in Papua New Guinea requires strong political will and commitment.
“The abuses are real and a reality in PNG.
“It is a growing epidemic.
“The use of harmful alcohol and illicit drugs are what causes public health problems, accounting for 5.5 per cent of diseases burdening the Western Pacific.
“The abuses are association with (deteriorating) socio-economic problems,” he added.
According to the World Health Organisation 2007 report, alcohol abuse not only affected individuals but also their family members, victims of alcohol-related violence and accidents.
“Many road accidents are related to drink-driving,” he added.
Sir Bob said PNG was becoming are haven for growing and transporting of illicit drugs, domestically and internationally, citing the big methamphetamine trafficking bust in Bulolo.
“This conference will establish a National Alcohol Policy aimed at reducing alcohol and drug related harm in our society,” he said in his address at the opening of the conference.
