JUDAH Rimbu recorded a perfect three-from-three with the boot to help Border Storm beat QPR Colts 14-10 in the National Capital District Governor’s Cup final at the Kaugere Oval yesterday.
The Storm claimed K10,000 and the Cup from an improbable position after recording two wins in the quarters (against 9-Mile Dwarves) and semifinals (Dei Hunters) on Saturday to make the final.
A robust Storm outfit hit the ground running as they showed their strength in attack with the help of man-of-the-match Rimbu.
Rimbu opened the scoring with a penalty conversion early in the match and later converted a try by utility Solomon Nandape to give the Storm an 8-0 lead at half-time.
Colts, under the guidance of halves Maya Clark and Joel Tapie, were able to find room to run through fullback Simon Toke.
However, strong a Storm defence and handling errors cost them possession in crucial moments of the game.
The Storm opened the second-half scoring with Jackray Elpa breaching Colts’ defence for a converted try.
A late Colts comeback saw two tries from Stanley William and Ben Wemin in the space of eight minutes but the damage had already been done as the Storm saw out the win.
Tournament coordinator Simon Nuabo praised supporters for helping ensure a trouble-free final.
“It’s good to see everyone throughout the three electorates in Port Moresby coming together and supporting in the true spirit of the game,” he said.
“The teams in the finals had shown discipline. That’s how we want to see rugby league being played in our city.
“The match itself was a success and we’re hoping for more successful tournaments like this in the future.”
