The story matters, says UN rep

United Nations resident coordinator and UNDP resident representative is urging journalists to be the best in the work they do as it helps solve issues in the country.
Roy Trivedy told the media in Port Moresby yesterday that there were a lot of issues going on in the country that needed to be addressed or aired for the authorities to take the matter into consideration.
“It is absolutely vital for PNG journalists to claim ownership of their stories within the country,” Trivedy said.
“Not many people know stories happening in the country. Only you as a journalist can report back on the stories.”
Trivedy said Papua New Guinea journalists were not doing enough to write stories and it’s not because they did not care but because they did not have resources, the time and the right kind of support.
“Journalists are the only ones who know authentically what’s happening in people’s lives,” he said.
“Working with people in all the provinces will really change their lives,” he said.
Trivedy said journalism did change perception on how people saw things.
“I expect to see PNG journalists doing global coverage in a few years’ time and they need support on that, which is why it is very important that the UN system, the other embassies all continue to keep doing the training, keep creating opportunities.”
Trivedy is leaving PNG and his post as the UN resident coordinator and UNDP resident representative.
