MOKAI Titans’ defence enabled them to beat Semase Cowboys 20- 14 in the Tei Kariko Rugby League grand final at the Sir Tore Lokoloko Oval, Iokea, Gulf, on Sunday.
The grand final did not see any violence or unruly behaviour from the players, team officials or supporters which was priased by organisers.
Tei Kariko Rugby League executives invited Gulf Isapea chairman Jacob Ivaroa to kick off the A grade final. Ivaroa, on behalf of Isapea committe, gave cash prizes for the grand finalists from the village league.
There was high praise as former West rugby league stars Haro brothers Don and Mirisa, who had been involved with sport in the village. The Titans, who were unbeaten during the regular season and claimed the minor premiership, were pushed hard across the field but in the end their experience and better execution saw them win the final. The star of the final was Harry Opa, who was the main threat with ball in hand, while for the Cowboys big centre Smith Siviri and Dixie Tore proved a handful for the titans defence.
The halftime score was 6-6 with a try to Titans Opa converted by Tore.Cowboys’ Heni Miro scored for his side. The second stanza was riddled with errors with neither team able to mount any period of sustained attack.
Despite this the Titans made the most of their opportunities to be 20-8 in front with less than 10 mnutes left in the game.
The Cowboys pushed hard and managed a converted try but in the end it was not enough.
