A GRADE 9 student in Gulf has been charged with breaching curfew hours in Kerema town, according to acting police commander Snr Insp Michael Pakyei.
“The 17-year-old attending Kerema Coronation Secondary School was allegedly drunk on Saturday and was arrested him on the streets after 10pm,” he said.
“We wanted to charge him K50,000 bail but we used our discretion to allow him out on K200.
“He will appear before the Kerema District Court next week. We also arrested and charged two other men with similar offences and we allowed them K200 bail each.”
Snr Insp Pakyei said the accused had been warned when arrested earlier of breaching the 10pm-5am curfew.
“So we arrested and charged them when breaching the curfew the second time.
“We also arrested two females for breaching the curfew hours.
“But we just warned and released them as they are first-time offenders. I’m also warning PMV operators to observe social distancing and not to overload their PMVs because we will also charge them under the Pandemic Act.”
Meanwhile, in West Sepik, two Malaysians and an Indian employed by a logging company appeared before the Vanimo District Court for allegedly breaching the National Maritime Safety Authority Act by allowing two unseaworthy tug boats to go out to the sea, senior magistrate Sasa Inkung said.
Kazhang Anak, 47, from Sarawak, Malaysia, Tirong Choung, 71, also from Sarawak and Sandy Sasrik, from India, are out on a bail of K1,000 each. They will appear before the court on Sept 7.

  • Good one. How about police officers in POM arresting and charging hundreds of people in a day for not wearing masks in shops, markets and PMVs overloading? I’m sure the state will make more money.
