A NATIONAL Polytechnic Institute student has died after he was stabbed in the chest in Lae on Saturday, Lae Met Supt Chief Supt Chris Kunyanban says.
“The student was walking to a bus stop after allegedly drinking alcohol with friends in East Taraka when he was stabbed,” he said.
“The assailant fled and the student was pronounced dead on arrival at Angau Memorial Hospital.”
Chief Supt Kunyanban said police were investigating the murder and appealed to eyewitnesses to help solve the case.
In another case, Chief Supt Kunyanban said a vehicle was reported hijacked in Hobu (outside Lae) by youths believed to be from the dump area.
“Police have recovered the vehicle and the identity of the suspects are known,” he said.
He said two car thefts, one kidnapping, stabbing of two young women, a murder at Papua New Guinea University of Technology and an armed robbery were reported in Lae in the past two weeks.
Chief Supt Kunyanban said two major armed robberies happened in Lae involving Golden Valley Enterprise and Hetadikaka Store two weeks ago.
“The robbery suspects have been identified, but, unfortunately, police are yet to make any arrests because the suspects had fled into hiding,” he said, appealing to communities to help track down the suspects.
“This has affected the business community and people have to be cautious as the robbers can strike any time.”
