A SCHOOLBOY was arrested for having firecrackers while travelling from Wewak to Madang last week, Madang police commander acting Supt Mazuc Rubiang says.
“Police confiscated the firecrackers and the schoolboy was also charged,” he added.
Acting Supt Rubiang advised students who had completed their examinations and were travelling to spend their holiday with their families and friends to exercise caution on what they carry during their journey home.
“I do not want students to end up in the hands of the police just because they have illegal items,” he said.
“If you want to travel and enjoy your holiday with your families, you must be free from illegal items.”
Acting Supt Rubiang said police would be conducting random vehicle checks not only along the highways in Madang, but nationwide.
“The general election is coming up next year and we want a safe and free election,” he said.
“So police will be on full alert on the transportation of firearms and offensive weapons.
“Firecrackers had been used as weapons during fights and cause noise pollution.
“Firecrackers can also shock people to death, especially the elderly and babies.”
