A STUDENT attending Kopen Secondary School in Wabag, Enga, was stabbed to death near Mt Hagen early yesterday morning, police say.
Western Highlands acting police commander Chief Inspector Tim Korado said the boy was spending the holidays with his sister and brother-in-law in Mt Hagen.
Police are trying to find out the motive for the murder as he was stabbed while sleeping on a bed at his sister’s home at Koibuka village at around 7am.
Police are questioning a man from Kelowagi village, about three kilometres away, over the incident.
The villager was handed over to the police by members of his Moge Andaks tribe. He will be charged after police have completed their investigations.
Korado will release the name of the student and the grade he was in last year when his family in Enga have been informed of his death.
“I want to thank the Moge Andaks tribesmen for their quick action to hand in the suspect who is now behind bars,” he said.
Meanwhile, Korado said New Year celebrations were generally quiet in the city and along the main road.
He said most celebrated the New Year in their homes.
“I want to thank all the people for their cooperation in celebrating the Christmas and New Year peacefully in the province,” he said.
