THERE are fewer opportunities for Papua New Guinean students to secure university scholarship programmes overseas, according to an Indonesian scholarship recipient.
During brief discussions with Indonesian Ambassador Andriana Supandy and education and cultural attaché Dr Chaerun Anwar, a student attending the Nusa Putra University in Indonesia through online classes, Sinogenel Samson, said they were honoured to receive the scholarship.
He said their applications were rejected by almost 10 universities overseas but felt privileged when the Indonesian university accepted them.
“We are grateful to the Indonesian government and the Nusa Putra University for allowing us to continue our studies,” Samson said.
“We hope to be good ambassadors of Papua New Guinea among students from all over the world.”
The three students are Samson, from Chimbu, Dianna Taeng, from Kavieng, and Villiwaora Vali from Bougainville, were doing first-year bachelor in computer information systems at the Nusa Putra, Sukabumi. “(We’re) looking forward for an adventure during our studies at Nusa Putra,” Samson said.
Supandy told The National that his office would facilitate the relationship between PNG and Indonesian universities, students and the people to learn from each other. “I will do my best to strengthen the cooperation people to people, universities to universities and business to business,” he said.
