Students’ busfare

Letters

THE ICCC would like to inform all Public Motor Vehicle (PMV) operators and the general public that students should be charged concessional fares for PMV services along declared routes in Port Moresby.
Students from lower primary (elementary/grade 1) to upper secondary (grade 12), in Port Moresby, should be only paying 50 per cent of the approved adult fares, while students in tertiary institutions (universities, colleges) should be paying 75 per cent of the approved adult fares.
PMV operators are advised to comply with these concessional fares and should note that overcharging students is an offence under the Prices Regulation Act (Chapter No.320). The ICCC will not hesitate to prosecute offending PMV operators
Therefore, the ICCC is calling on students and the general public to report PMV operators that are over charging, to the ICCC.
When being overcharged by a PMV , the following details about the PMV should be provided to the ICCC: a general description of the vehicle, registration number, route number, fares charged and key details of conversation with the driver/crew or any comments made by them (if any).
In relation to non-completion of declared routes, ICCC is also calling on the public to report PMV operators who are not completing their routes, to the Road Traffic Authority.
The Road Traffic Authority is responsible for establishing these PMV routes as well as the enforcement of the completion of these PMV routes.

  • Thank you RTA for this public notice. The PMV drivers usually demand full fares from students, from the lower grade to grade 12. I as a parent ask why this has to be…bus driver and crews expect students to pay the full fare like the adults. Please let me take this time to thank the RTAs acting CEO for this is timely, as Taurama Beach which is within the City area charges K2.00 fare just for a short ride down from Manu Auto Port. This charge applies for all including small school kids. I feel this is a real rip off when commuters from Gordons Market to Bomana pay only K1.00. The distance are not the same yet one charges less and the other more. ‘
Please RTA check on these and help our travelling passengers for a fair and just fare.

Thank you all and Happy Independence…..
