STUDENTS from Southern Highlands attending the University of Technology (Unitech) are in the province carrying out an awareness campaign regarding the boycott of classes by students.
The boycott is into its second week to support the reinstatement Dr Albert Schram as the vice-chancellor.
The students have visited Mendi and Mogol Secondary schools and other institutions and today they will carry on their programme near the Mendi Police Station.
President of Southern Highlands Students’ Association David Telma said out of the 315 Southern Highlands students attending the university, only 27 came as they were concerned about the future of the university and students attending secondary schools around the country.
He said secondary school students specialising in science courses would be affected in the future.
All parents in the province need to understand why they are boycotting classes.
“We cannot back off the decision, that is not in the best interest of the people, this is a democratic country and we need to stand for our rights,” Telma said.
He said many parents, especially the illiterate population, did not know what was going on.
and they needed properexplanations to understanding what was going on.
He said they would continue to boycott classes for an indefinite period until the government gave a favourable response.
Mendi High School teacher and a parent Jimmy John said parents are not happy to see their students coming back to the province with confused minds when they supposed to be at school.
“The government must address this issue immediately and must come to better solutions to make sure such strikes are not repeated in future, he said.
Many parents are confused who is at fault for the boycotting of classes. We cannot let our students suffer if what they are doing is right,” he said.
