Students turn trash into art

STUDENTS from a secondary school in Port Moresby created classroom decorations using empty juice packets, plastics, newspapers, cartons and slippers.
Kilakila Secondary School deputy principal Pala Balun told The National that the idea came about after seeing rubbish everywhere in school ground.
“We have issue of littering in school. You will find a lot of empty K1 juice packets and plastics everywhere, so I told students to make use of the plastics instead of littering everywhere,” she said.
Balun said students created a school logo, dress from charts and newspapers, river eco system and other classrooms decorations for displaying.
Pala added they were inspired by movies and books.
Though it was time consuming with a lot of effort, Pala said the students were motivated to go to school every day just to finish their projects.
She added that some students did not perform well academically but they were creative with their hands.
The students completed their projects in two weeks in time for their work to be displayed on World Environment Day for other schools.
