THE ice-making and storage facility for the Vanimo fish market in West Sepik has generated about K200,000 since it was launched last June, a provincial official says.

Provincial fisheries project coordinator Lawrence Kowopiai said the facility earns between K3000 and K500,000 monthly depending on the weather conditions and customers.

The ice-making and storage facility was built together with and housed inside the Vanimo fish market facility, through collaboration between National Fisheries Authority (NFA) and Overseas Fishery Corporation Foundation of Japan at a cost of K800,000.

Kowopiai said production of ice depends on the availability of fuel.

“Ice production happens on a daily basis,” he said.

“The money that is already been generated are put into the project account for the Sandaun government,” Kowopiai said.

He said ice was sold mostly to businesses houses within the Vanimo area.
