Sudden departure of foreigner questioned

QUESTIONS are being raised over the sudden departure of a foreigner who is under investigation and whose passport had been withheld by the police.
Sources said the woman had somehow obtained a letter of travel from her country’s high commission on short notice and left with her family on March 19.
They said the woman could have also used a different name when she and her family flew to Manila before boarding another flight home.
The woman, who had been employed as a human resource manager by a large local company for several years, was suspected of misappropriating some money.
The company lodged a report against her on March 16 and she was ordered by the police to surrender her passport. When the couple failed to report for work on March 20, the company contacted the police and were told that they were still holding the woman’s passport.
The company learnt that the woman, husband and two children had flown to the Philippines the previous day.
On checking with the high commission, the company was told that the woman did not contact them prior to leaving Papua New Guinea.
The company believes otherwise.
The police informed the high commission of the investigation through a letter on March 20.
The woman’s husband was also employed by the same company as a branch manager and is also suspected of financial misconduct.
They said it was the second time that a former employee suspected of misappropriation had managed to flee the country without a passport.
The other person was also of the same nationality.
The police declined to comment.
