Summit an opportunity to engage, says speaker

SPEAKER Job Pomat says the Speakers Investment Summit provided an opportunity to the Members of Parliament to engage with development partners.
Pomat said the summit targeted MPs’ support staff who in most cases delivered development programmes on behalf of MPs in the constituencies.
“Many a time, backbenchers are left out of development forums or events because these are held primarily overseas or in destinations that are difficult for members of parliament to access due to various reasons.
“This summit brings those discussion and opportunities to their doorsteps – this House,” Pomat said.
He said there had been a growing trend in the changing of MPs’ functions.
Besides their traditional ones of representing the people and making laws, and providing oversight to government roles, some were now required to oversee the disbursement of electoral development funds.
“I note from this inaugural summit, that discussions will tie in topics such as past experiences, to be led by some of our former prime ministers, sustainable development solutions, experiences from the global community, new innovations in the agriculture and technology sector, SMEs, our laws and how they affect business and also contributions from the international financial institutions and donor partners.
He said during the 2017 induction programme, there were a lot of displays and exhibition booths.
“Everybody is keen to show case their products and services.
“Without doubt that kind of commitment can only bring positive outcomes.”
