AFTER two weekends of action, the Kumul Petroleum Papua New Guinea Rugby Union Super Sevens Series will end in round three at Sir Hubert Murray Stadium in Port Moresby, according to an official.
PNGRU President Paul Siwi confirmed that the final round of the series would be played this weekend.
Initially, the series was scheduled to end in round four, but the sport’s national governing body decided to cut short the tournament due to the general election.
Siwi said in a letter that election-related activities may pose a threat to the safety of the teams.
He said according to Air Niugini, the travel period during election would exceed its capacity, therefore flights were likely to be cancelled or delayed.
Tournament director Paul Joseph said the last leg of the series this weekend would decide the overall champion of the inaugural series.
After two rounds, the top-eight teams are Morobe Hammerheads (44 points), Kimbe Rebels (38), Capital Rugby Union Boromas (28), Black Orchids (28), National Capital District Rugby Union Dagwalas (28), East New Britain Dawapia (24), New Ireland Drongos (24) and Gulf Saukuru (20).
Hammerheads are in the box seat to claim the series after winning the opening two legs.
But organisers said the overall championship was still up for grabs.
“At the moment, teams have a slight points difference from each other, so this weekend will be the real series decider,” tournament director Paul Joseph said.
“Although Hammerheads are leading, Rebels and Boromas can cause an upset in the last round.
“So teams need to reach the quarterfinals to be in the race for the grand prize.”
