ELECTION-related violence has taken a toll on a candidate’s property at Keas village, Enga province.
Last weekend, independent Wabag open candidate Isaac Lupari lost his family home and vehicles to angry men allegedly supporters of a rival candidate. They attacked his property and burnt down the house and vehicles.
Lupari said damage would cost tens of thousands of kina. The reason for the attack is not known but Lupari said it could have transpired because the rival candidate had not wanted him to stand in the seat. His relatives have identified the men to be supporters of a candidate vying for the Wabag open seat.  “This is an act of desperate people who have no respect for the rule of law,” Lupari said. “I have the right to contest in this election and that should be respected by the people. “The seat of Wabag open is not owned by individuals or families. “It is the property of the people of Wabag and they decide who becomes their MP.
“Those who become leaders in parliament through intimidation and threats of any kind have no place in society.” Lupari called on the particular candidate to take control of his men.Wabag police were immediately alerted and quickly controlled what could have turned  out into a tribal war.“I have referred the matter to the police because I believe in the rule of law to protect lives and properties and bring those responsible to justice,” he said.
