Surveyor registration irks official

National

There is a negative growth in the number of registered surveyors in the country which is a major concern, Surveyors Association of PNG president Bill McKibben says.
He told The National that the proposed postgraduate course for surveyors at the University of Technology has not progressed much due to funding issues.
“Unfortunately Unitech doesn’t have the funds to run this course and we have to find the funds somewhere,” McKibben said.
“The Government hasn’t been able to come forward with it nor the university. There have only been three new registrations in the last five years.
“Yet in the last five years, four registered surveyors have passed on so we have got negative growth on the number of registered surveyors.”
He said there were a lot more career opportunities for surveyors doing other forms of survey work, particularly in the field of computers and geographical information systems.
“I’d like to see an increase in members of the association, but even then over the last couple of years, it’s been less than a hundred.”
