POLICE in Wewak, East Sepik, have apprehended a suspect they believe is the leader of a gang that robbed passengers of a boat at Watam in Angoram last week.

East Sepik rural police station commander Insp James Baugen said the suspect, was nabbed in Bogia, Madang, last weekend.

He said six suspects armed with bush knives and other weapons robbed the passengers and the boat operator and used the boat to escape.

“There were also reports of the same group terrorising the Biwat communities.

“Police gave chase after these reports and apprehended the prime suspect in Bogia and took him to Wewak over the weekend for questioning,” Baugen said.

In Yangoru, police are also investigating the break-in and stealing at the Works compound last week.

Baugen said the suspects that committed the offence were known to police and would be arrested shortly.

Meanwhile, the rural police chief is appealing for support from all 26 LLG presidents in the province to support police with adequate logistics to fight escalating law and order.

“In reality crime is manageable with the current manpower if police are properly equipped with logistics and fuel which are a major setback.

“I call on the leaders to come forward and let us work in partnership to weed out this nonsense and create a safe and secure environment for our people,” Baugen said.
