A MAN was shot dead and several others sustained gunshot wounds following a failed robbery at the Bumayong settlement in Lae, Morobe, last Thursday.

Police said an armed gang robbed an Asian-owned shop and escaped on foot into a nearby settlement with the money.

The gang accidently crossed paths with a police squad that was patrolling the area on foot following the killing of a security manager the previous day.

“One of them was shot dead and the others were apprehended and taken into custody,” Lae metropolitan commander Supt Iven Lakatani said.

“Police were in the area to monitor the MMSS security personnel when the unsuspecting gang members ran straight into them.”

Lakatani said police were trying their best to curb the surge in criminal activities in the Bumayong area by working with local residents through the community policing concept.

He reiterated that “crime does not pay” and criminals would pay the price for their activities.
