A SUSPECT who allegedly shot dead a university student last month in Jiwaka surrendered to police on Christmas Day after police burnt down a house in Kendeng village.
Provincial police commander Chief Insp Gideon Kauke told The National that the village councillor went to the police station and surrendered himself after negotiations between village leaders and the councillor.
Kauke said police had gathered evidence including eye witness accounts on Sunday and charges would laid against the councillor.
“At the moment, we are looking for a magistrate to have him (suspect) before the court in January.”
He said the court would decide whether to remand him at Baisu jail in Western Highlands or Barawagi jail in Chimbu while his case was being investigated.
Kauke said the suspect had high blood pressure and his health would be considered as well.
“We will act upon the doctor’s advice,” he said.
Kauke said apart from that incident the province had been quiet throughout the Christmas period.
Stenic Whome Poiya, 25, a UPNG tourism and hospitality final year student was spending his holiday in his village when he was killed.
