A MAN who bit off a woman’s lip was freed by Port Moresby police last week after the victim failed to turn up to give evidence against him.
“It is unlawful for police to detain the suspect without charging him,” NCD police operations chief Andy Bawa said.
Police reports said the suspect from Lond village in Ambum, Enga, was arrested on Dec 23, after he tried to eat a six-month-old baby in a drain near Gordon Secondary School.
He was apprehended by police and detained at the Boroko police cells but escaped on Dec 26, and attacked the victim, Helen Supa, at the back of the Boroko Post Office.
“The case will be reopened if the victim comes forward and gives evidence,” Bawa said.
Police said the suspect admitted committing the crime.
He said it was the third time he had eaten human flesh.
Meanwhile Bawa said police were  investigating the death of another man who was alleged to have been part of a gang that robbed the Gordon Food Store.
He said there were confusing reports regarding the man’s death.
“Some said the man was killed by the shop’s security guards.
“Others said he was killed by members of the public.
“But police will investigate and find the killers,” Bawa said.
