RECENT announcements by the International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI) South Pacific would impact the economy, logistic sector, importers and exporters.
According to the ICTSI, the regulated tariffs applicable to the international wharves – the South Pacific International Container Terminal (Spict) in Lae and Motukea International Terminal outside Port Moresby – will not be increased this year.
“This means that in five years (2018-2022) of operation and activity of the two terminals, rates directly payable by PNG importers and exporters to terminals have increased by only two per cent in Motukea and four per cent in Lae –negligible numbers if compared to compound consumer price index and any increase along the supply chain.
“The decision has been taken by ICTSI management to support and provide maximum possible relief to all stakeholders in the supply chain which businesses have been badly affected by the negative impacts of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and by the increase in ocean freights.
“ICTSI has put lots of effort and investment to ensure both terminal are open and operational during the Covid-19, therefore securing a safe and steady flows of goods in and out of PNG.”
