Police have arrested a teacher and charged him with raping his student at a primary school in Southern Highlands.
Provincial police commander Gideon Kauke told The National that the teacher was arrested and charged with the rape of a minor.
He is currently in custody at Mendi Police Station.
“The crime investigation division is currently looking into the case and the teacher will soon appear before the committal court,” Kauke said. The student said she was raped earlier this year. Her father refused compensation and reported the matter to police and media.
The father said that since reporting the matter to police, he and his family had been threatened and intimidated by the teacher’s family and tribesmen.
Kauke said he was not aware of any threats being made and called on the father to report to police if he had been threatened.
