ALL teacher training programmes at the Port Moresby’s Jubilee Institute of Higher Education (Jihe) will be transferred to Mt Hagen’s Kimininga campus in Western Highlands with the aim to make it a standalone college after meeting the country’s higher education requirements.
Assemblies of God (AOG) regional superintendent Reverend Peter Ropra said this follows the opening of Jihe Mt Hagen campus by AOG Papua New Guinea last week.
He said the church’s national council had made the initial decision in 2021 to establish a number of teachers colleges, starting with West New Britain’s Kimbe which is now into its second year.
Ropra said it would be under Jihe until all requirements were met to become a standalone college which would be within the next five years, adding all academic programmes and campus name will be under Jihe.
Jihe registrar Jimmy Olali said registration would start this week and lectures would begin next week for the first 40 students accepted to a three-year diploma programme.
“It will offer diploma and degree programmes at the school of education, as well as business, accounting and Christian education,” Olali said.
“The ward members from the district pledged K36,000 to build more staff houses with local Superintendent Michael Ruimb also pledging to build a double classroom.”
Buiyer school inspector Wilson McKenzie said all schools in the district would allow practical teaching for the students.
Baisu Jail commander Chief Supt Rensen Tiki appealed to young people to stay away from drugs and alcohol, and focus on education.
The new campus opening follows higher education secretary Fr Jan Czuba’s direction in a letter dated Dec 13 2023 stating: “Should AOG intend to establish a campus under the purview of the Jubilee Institute of Higher Education, it is imperative that such an entity be designated as the Mt Hagen campus of Jubilee Institute of Higher Education.”
