Teachers not paid again

Letters

THE undesirable financial predicament of the Education Department was stunningly on display last week when grade 12 national examination markers were not paid their allowances.
The 12-day marking workshop in NCD was attended by about 300 teachers and national examiners. These teachers were accommodated two to a room and had to make do with scaled-down meals.
As if that was not enough, their allowances were not paid even after all the markings had been completed.
To add insult to injury, they were advised that the allowances would be deposited into their bank accounts on Thursday, when the marking exercise was completed.
The continuing disrespectful treatment of teachers by the Education Department through the Measurement Services Division is more evidence that the Government is facing cash-flow problems.
Education Minister Nick Kuman needs to explain why the markers were not paid their allowances on time.
