Teachers vital for change

ELEMENTARY teachers play a very important role in developing a children’s mindset and change in their attitudes, an official says.
Morobe community development adviser Kiung Kimbing told about 107 teachers of trainers (TOT) graduated under a positive parenting programme at Boana, Nawaeb, Morobe, to be role models that people would follow.
“You (teachers) have to reflect on your attitude so people will follow your quality,” he said.
“The parents’ dreams are their children and you (teachers) will manage those dreams.
“Do what you think is best because this programme is very important and it will help us develop the mindset of our people.”
During graduation, the positive parenting programme was launched and a partnership by United Nations Children’s Fund, Evangelical Lutheran Church PNG (ELCPNG) church, the Nawaeb development authority and the provincial community development was announced.
Kimbing said the programme would be resourced and sustained through the partnership for the benefit of all.
ELCPNG coordinator for non-formal education Duaro Embi said the graduates were volunteer elementary teachers who would facilitate the programme in their villages.
“They will find time to mentor the parents on positive behaviour and how to bring the child to positive manner,” he said.
“Not all parents know how to bring up a child.
“Those teachers will help the parents to change their way of doing things to actually understand how the brain of a child develops and at what age.
“So when parents understand, they can assist the child accordingly.
“That’s one of the objectives of positive parenting for child development.”
Meanwhile, Embi called for responsible authorities to put their hands together to drive the agenda in all districts of Morobe.
