AN awareness was recently carried out to emphasise the importance of the fish value chain in East Sepik.
According to a statement from Food and Agriculture Orgnisation (FAO), as part of the EU-Streit programme, a combined team of programme officers from fisheries, gender and youth inclusion, renewable energy and small-to-medium enterprise divisions conducted an 8-day awareness-raising campaign in 10 Scholten and Wewak islands.
The programme was aimed at including remote areas in the region.
“The FAO-led team provided outreach to 1000 farmers, including women and youth on the islands, introducing the programme’s fish value chain component, including alternative fish dryers and fish aggregation devices, to the locals,” the statement said.
“Focusing on building a network to facilitate local households’ inclusion in the programme, the team provided the fisheries-dependent islanders and local cocoa and vanilla farmers with knowledge on organising and establishing cooperatives business groups to benefit from programme support.”
