DESPITE bowing out of the National Capital District (NCD) Governor’s Cup, Border Storm founder and team manager Tony Wani remains optimistic about creating more opportunities for upcoming talents.
He said he was passionate about bringing together youths through rugby league.
“In 2018, my wife and I decided to field a team in the offseason tournament because we both wanted to give back something to our youths,” Wani said.
“We knew that if we did something good for our youths, our community would be safe.
“We’re keen on helping address drug and alcohol abuse, so it’s best to keep youths busy and engaged in something that we all love like rugby league.
“We promote our young people to the next level of rugby league.
“We’ve had the privilege of our players coming through and reaching the Digicel Cup.
“The same year we started the team, we won the Ipatas Cup gold pass to represent NCD.
“In 2019, we won the NCD Governor’s Cup and we did all this with our own money.
“It’s quite hard but if it’s for the sake of giving back to our community, then it’s worth it.”
Apart from managing the team, Wani and his wife are also accommodating their players during the offseason at their Gabutu residence in Moresby South.
