TEAM NCD made a clean sweep in touch, winning three
gold medals at the PNG Games in Kimbe.
Touch competition manager Alphonse Joffey said the Port Moresby team had the advantage of rules of the game which made them too good for their opponents.
Joffey said NCD won gold in the open men and women and the mixed competition.
He said the open men and open women’s competitions were the last matches played at Sarakolok Oval in Mosa to wind up the Games touch competition.
In the men’s final, NCD beat West New Britain 5-4 for the gold medal while Morobe beat ENB with the same scoreline for bronze medal
In the women’s final, NCD women edged out West New Britain 6-5 while Morobe beat East New Britain 5-4
“It has been a hectic week for touch at the Games in Kimbe,” Joffey said.
He said the provinces that frequented the national touch championships stood out while Highlands provinces such as Chimbu and
Southern Highlands had a long way to catch up.
In the mixed competition, Team NCD beat East New Britain 9-8 in the men’s game while host WNB beat Oro 5-3 to pick up the bronze.
Joffey added the touch competition was successful and said it was pleasing to see the HOC and the PNG Games Council involving the national federations to run or conduct the competitions which greatly helped the respective federations to use their knowledge of the games.
He gave the thumbs up to the PNG Games Council and the PNG Sports Foundation for allowing the touch federation to assist in the running of the competition.
He said NCD had the upper hand with technical know-how of the game.
He said there were talents throughout the country and it was now the job of the touch federation to identify and develop those players.
