PAPUA New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) chairman Sandis Tsaka has warned Digicel Cup teams to comply its Covid-19 protocols as part of an effort to ensure the sport’s return.
He told The National after the season launching in Port Moresby yesterday that “no team are above the law”.
“At a time when the Covid-19 pandemic continues to affect countries around the world, we must work together to deliver the competition in the safest way possible,” Tsaka said.
“That means teams are to comply with our ‘Banis Protocols’ to ensure public health.
“There are match-day and training protocols that must be followed.
“No team are greater than rugby league.
“Let’s all work together to repay the faith the Government and the state of emergency controller have shown to the sport.”
Tsaka commended sponsors of the Digicel Cup and PNGRFL for sticking by the sport despite the trying times caused by the pandemic.
“We certainly wouldn’t come this far without their support,” he said.
“We’d like to thank Digicel, SP Brewery, Boroko Motors, Motor Vehicles Insurance Limited and all our others sponsors.
“We’d also like to thank the 12 franchise, and their sponsors and partners for contributing towards the game’s development.”
PNG Sports Foundation chairman Ian Chow commended the sport for setting an example for other sports to follow.
Meanwhile, the Digicel Cup will kick off on July 4 with the first four rounds of the revised 11-match season to be played in Port Moresby and Lae only.
The top-six playoffs kick off on Sept 20 with all matches to be played at Sir John Guise Stadium.
