Digicel PNG says strong winds near Mt Otto, in Eastern Highlands, were responsible for network disruptions, causing inconvenience to customers in some of the Highlands areas in the past few days.

Chief operations officer Michael Hebert said the winds forced the satellite dish responsible for diverting traffic to shift out of alignment.

That  resulted in customers experiencing difficulty in accessing better network connections.

“As a result, mobile phones and internet services had been offline or operating below usual standards in Goroka, Madang, Enga and Mt Hagen and other centres,” he said.

However, Hebert confirmed that as of yesterday, the 2G service had been restored in all areas concerned.

“However, mobile internet or the 3G service is still affected for areas such as Enga, Goroka and Mt Hagen,” he added.

“Our technical teams have been dispatched to climb the mountain since the site cannot be accessed by helicopter due to strong winds prevailing in the area.”

Hebert added that the network’s services should be stabilised and fully restored by the end of the week.

“Digicel PNG would like to sincerely apologise to all our customers and clients for the inconvenience caused.”
