TELIKOM PNG is building one of the largest IP (internet protocol) microwave link to replace the old system which has been in operation for more 26 years plus.

Telikom said the new network can deliver over 3Gbps (gigabytes per second) of capacity connecting Port Moresby to Madang via Lae as well as through an alternate route via Mt Hagen.

Hence, the new microwave link is designed to address the pain points in the network and provide the capacity with drop off nodes to serve all major towns along the route. For the link between Mt Hagen and Madang, drop off nodes and equipment have already been installed at Goroka, Wabag, Kundiawa, Minj and Banz.

This phase of the project would be online in coming weeks.

National Broadband Network (NBN) project programme manager Jeffrey Bean said this is one of the key projects under the NBN programme planned to modernise the Telikom network in the country.

“We are evolving the backbone network from a predominantly Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) network of today to a fully IP based for tomorrow. This is native technology for IP traffic and offers significant benefits including operational efficiency and allows better network management,” Bean said.

He added that the new network has the smarts and improved network reporting tools that should see Telikom PNG establish a very reliable network.
