TELSTARS beat Sparrows 34-25 in their round two Port Moresby Netball Association premier grade fixture at the Rita Flynn Courts on Saturday.
Both teams started with great energy, resulting in a first quarter tied score of 7-7.
In the second quarter, Telstars edged out to 16-14 lead and continued that lead in the third frame leading 24-21.
Telstars previously beat Paramana in their last fixture and have now got past Sparrows — giving it wins over the competition’s best sides. Telstars young front end of, 15-year-old goal shooter Eva Aua and 22-year-old goal attack Boia Peter stood out with their composed but determined display under the hoop.
The pair’s effective combination saw them cause Sparrows defensive end headaches, and that was impressive considering who the Sparrows had protecting their rim — former national representative in veteran Kilala Owen and current Pepe Courtney Abel.
Telstars captain Julie-Anne Diro said she was pleased with her side’s performance especially the pace and intensity of their play.
“Sparrows are one of the best sides in the competition. They have a well-structured and strategic game so beating them was really good,” Diro said.
“It’s too early say how well we’re doing but we’ll work on our passing and speed when we come back next weekend.”
Result: Mermaids 65 Veupunama 20, Telstars 34 Sparrows 25.
