Temporary Lae market set to open

LAE’s temporary main market will open for use next week for the convenience of fresh produce vendors and customers.
Lae City Authority (LCA) chief executive officer Robin Calistus said there was a slight delay to the initial opening date as variations were made to the installment of its water and power supply.
He said an oversight resulted in these important details not being included in the contract for the construction of the temporary market.
“LCA arranged and met the cost with the contractor and everything has been finalised,” he said. “Our market police have already occupied their police post since last week, ready for the temporary market facility to be opened on Monday, May 13.”
Lae residents witnessed a ground-breaking ceremony for the K5 million temporary market at the old airport, last October where the contract was awarded to Honibrooks.
This temporary facility will house fresh produce vendors from across Morobe as work begins on Lae’s K42 million permanent main market facility, co-funded by LCA and the governments of Australia and New Zealand.
