Team Papua New Guinea on Tuesday announced that tennis star Abigail Tere-Apisah, pictured, will be the flag-bearer for Sunday’s opening ceremony at the 16th Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa.
Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee president Sir John Dawanicura revealed that Tere-Apisah would be leading the team.
Tere-Apisah, who is training with the national tennis team in Australia, was given the honours following her achievements.
Prime Minster James Marape, when presenting the PNG flag to the team on Tuesday night, reminded athletes to always carry the flag in spirit when representing the nation.
“Congratulaitons to Abigail,” Marape said.
“A nation of a thousand tribes but this is the thing that keeps us together.
“Our belief that one nation, one flag, one national anthem we can remain together strong as one united nation.
“As she leads us out, every one of you must carry the flag also in your heart.”
Tere-Apisah is understood the first PNG athlete and Pacific Islander in her sport to win a professional tournament earlier this year.
She is ranked No.1 in the nation and Oceania and won all the gold medals available in their competition at the 2015 Games in Port Moresby.
The Pacific Games end on July 20.
